Join the Union Square Partnership on Saturday, May 16th as we celebrate It’s My Park! Day with activities to maintain and beautify Union Square Park.  This volunteer event is perfect for families so bring the kids and spend the day raking, planting and weeding. No equipment or experience is necessary, but please dress comfortably. To register,

VOLUNTEER (NYC, 4/25/09): 2nd Annual MillionTreesNYC Month and New York Cares Hands on New York Day

Save the Date: April 25th, 2009

This April, join the Mayor and thousands of New Yorkers to make a greener, greater New York City by planting and watering trees during the second annual MillionTreesNYC Month.

On April 25th, 20,000 trees will be planted in 18 sites Citywide as part of New York Cares' Hands on New York Day, and we need everyone's help to make this happen! Bring your friends, your family or your neighbors to roll up their sleeves, dig in, and help us reach our goal of one million trees by 2017.

The Mayor’s Volunteer Center of New York City, a program of the Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit, brings together individuals, corporations, government agencies and nonprofit organizations to connect people and facilitate meaningful volunteer opportunities that improve the quality of life in New York City. We need your help as we plan our 5th Annual Relay For Life of the National Tennis Center

(formerly Relay For Life of Shea Stadium).  Volunteers are needed to join the event planning committee.  Please join us to learn more about volunteer roles that are available to you.  We want the volunteer experience to be a rewarding one!  You will meet other planning committee members and help us to find the best volunteer fit for you!  Join us on:

VOLUNTEERS of the event planning committee help with:  

·        Recruit and motivate teams, individual participants and volunteers

·        Initiate and coordinate cancer survivorship and commemoration activities

·        Assist in recruiting cash and in-kind (free food, beverages, etc.) sponsors

·        Distribute Relay brochures and promotional materials about the event

·        Attend monthly Relay planning committee meetings

·        Volunteer on the day of the event by registering participants, distributing water, etc.  

 

The First Lap

Relay For Life is not just about honoring survivors – it's about empowering them to fight back against cancer.  The first lap at a Relay For Life is special.  It's the Survivor's Lap.  Cancer survivors from the community are invited to take part in this victory lap and be cheered on by fellow participants in true celebration of their courageous battle.

 

In The Evening

There is a luminaria candlelight ceremony in tribute to those who have been affected by cancer.  These luminarias are purchased in honor of those who have survived their battle with cancer, for those that are still fighting, and in memory of those who have courageously battled this disease but lost.  Votive candles are placed in white bags filled with sand and are positioned around the track.  The luminarias candles represent the healing power of community and the importance of funding to find a cure.

Please join us for a complimentary informational kick-off party on Thursday, February 26th to learn more about how you can form a team and volunteer at the American Cancer Society’s 5th Annual Relay For Life.  “Relay For Life” is an overnight event that brings our community together to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer, honor those who have won their battle and encourage those still in the battle.  It raises awareness of cancer and raises money to support the programs and services of the American Cancer Society.  We look forward to hosting our event in a new and exciting venue, the National Tennis Center, located right around the corner from Shea and hope you can't wait to join us!
